Deidre McCalla - Guitar Lessons for Adults and Kids

What You Learn

For the aspiring guitarist, the most important skills to develop are familiarity with basic chords and transitioning between them easily. Technique, scales, standard notation, tablature, and music theory are taught in an integrated manner. Lessons are shaped around the musical interests of the student and geared to their learning style. Beginning guitar or intermediate students (8+) interested in any style of music are welcome though I do not teach classical. Beginning students focus on basics and fundamentals. Intermediate students explore the various genres of music such as pop, singer-songwriter, folk, and country. Performance coaching is available to all students interested in developing their onstage presence.

Why I Teach

Sharing the joy of music through the art of teaching has been a joy equal to that of my lifelong passion and pursuit of performance. Some students, especially my adult learners, want to play the guitar simply for their own enjoyment; other students want to be rock stars. My job is to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which each student is given the tools she or he needs to achieve their goals.

Lesson Fee

Guitar lessons for all students are 30 minutes weekly in the same time slot. I bill $108 a month. There is no contract or registration fee.

About Me

I taught myself how to play guitar when I was 16 and have been a professional, full-time musician for over twenty years. My Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater is from Vassar College in New York and I am an alumna of the National Theater Institute in New London, CT. I also majored in Jazz Guitar for two years at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee. I am a proud member of Local 1000 of the American Federation of Musicians as well as a member of the North American Folk Alliance and a certified Touring Artist for the Georgia Council for the Arts.

I’ve recorded five albums and tour extensively throughout the United States and Canada performing at coffeehouses, colleges, clubs, and folk festivals including appearances at the Rialto Center for the Performing Arts in Atlanta and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Adjunct to my guitar teaching practice, I conduct college campus and festival workshops on performance, songwriting, surviving in the music business, and homeschooling.

"A great teacher is one who realizes that he himself is also a student and whose goal is not to dictate the answers, but to stimulate his students' creativity enough so that they go out and find the answers themselves." –Herbie Hancock
